About me

I am an American composer-pianist based in Clapham, London. Originally from northern California, I came to London ten years ago to do a PhD, which I earned in April 2011, and happily have stayed - I now divide my time between composing for small orchestras and theatre, performing, and teaching.

I hold a doctorate in composition from King's College London (2011), where I studied with George Benjamin. Previously I earned a BA in Music from Amherst College, an MA in Composition from Sussex University, and an MMus also in Composition from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.

My music has been performed in Germany, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Canada and the US, by groups including London Sinfonietta, New York City Opera, Arditti String Quartet, International Ensemble Modern Academy, ASKO Ensemble, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, and members of Philharmonia Orchestra.

I have premiered works as pianist/keyboardist, accordionist, conductor and vocalist, by composers including Seán Clancy, Paul Clift, Matías Hancke, Federico Reuben and Eric Wubbels, as well as with improvisational theatre group, Apocryphal Theatre. I have music directed for Kent-based mask and puppet theatre company, Strangeface, and for Chico Area Student Theatre and Students on Stage (both in California). I have performed with Reinbert de Leeuw, Wet Ink Ensemble, Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, and squib-box, at Handel House (London), Paradiso (Amsterdam), the Bowery Poetry Club (New York), Muziekcentrum Vredenburg (Utrecht), Korzo Theatre (Den Haag), and at rural venues in 25 British counties. Recently I did sound design for three staged readings at the Gate Theatre (Notting Hill) of three European plays in translation, as part of an AHRC Leadership Project, 'Translating Theatre: "Foreignisation on Stage"'.
